The Minister of Law and Order, Ranjith Madduma Bandara says that the final decision with regard to the “State of Emergency” will be announced after the next Security Council Meeting.

The “State of Emergency” was imposed on 6th of March by President Maithripala Sirisena following the spread of riots in Kandy.

It was imposed under the powers vested in him through the Section 11 of the Public Security Ordinance.

The President does have the power to impose “State of Emergency” for a period of 10 days in such circumstances.

However, if the state of emergency needs to be extended further, Parliament should ratify it.

The President informed the speaker of the ruling of emergency regulations on March 9th.
