The United Kingdom has announced a number of steps following the death of a spy by poisoning allegedly with Russian involvement.

The measures include the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats, the single biggest expulsion in over 30 years.

UK PM Theresa May said the UK would also not send an official government representative to the soccer World Cup in Russia this year.

The penalties mark the most serious deterioration in UK-Russia relations in recent years.

Theresa May said the diplomats, who have a week to leave, were identified as "undeclared intelligence officers".

Russia denies being involved in the attempted murder of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

It refused to meet May's midnight deadline to co-operate in the case.
