President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission to remove the temporary ban on Facebook with immediate effect following discussions with Facebook officials.

The Facebook officials arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday (Mar. 14).

The Sri Lanka government instructed the TRCSL to block the social media sites last week after it was found social media platforms were being used to incite communal disharmony with the spread of clashes in Kandy.

Meanwhile, a discussion between the 3-official from Facebook and Secretary to the President, Austin Fernando was at the Presidential Secretariat today (Mar. 15).

The talks had centred on how to prevent sharing communal and hate speech and restoration of the access to the social media site.

The team from the Facebook is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe later today.

Meanwhile, Facebook Sri Lanka Translation Group expressed its protest as the organization had not been invited to the discussion.

Chairman of the organization, Rajiv Yasiru Kuruvitage told our news team that his team has been translating the content for Facebook Sinhala users since 2014.

Other social media such as WhatsApp and Viber which were blocked after the Kandy riots have already been restored.
