New Revelations with regard to Sigiriya have come to light as a consequence of the recent discovery of the statue of a lion during excavations carried out at the Sigiriya Northern water drain.

Director General of the Central Cultural Fund Professor Prishantha Gunawardhana said that during excavations carried out recently, in addition to the statue of the lion, pebbles, iron and terracotta artefacts of archaeological significance were also discovered.

The Professor stated that the special clay-ware of foreign origin reflected the likelihood of international relations that must have been in existence during the time of King Kashyapa.

The evidence gives reason to believe that Sri Lanka did, in fact, have a developed trade relationship with  Rome and central Asian countries.
