Eight persons have been killed so far this year as a result of rising underworld clashes.

Yesterday (Mar. 19) two persons were killed in separate incidents and police said both the incidents are related to the underworld gang rivalry.

The shootings took place in Athurugiriya and Armour Street in Colombo.

One of them was killed in a shooting incident on the Galvarusawa Road in Athurugiriya yesterday.

Police identified the victim as Talagalage Nimalsiri Perera alias Podi Sudu.

The 44-year-old victim was an area resident and he was shot at by a gunman on a motorcycle.

It was revealed that the victim was a close associate of 'Kos Malli' who was also killed by a rival gang recently.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the gang members associated with underworld kingpin 'Makadure Madhush' are linked to this murder.

Four police teams have been deployed to probe this shooting.

Meanwhile, police investigations revealed that the person who was shot dead in Amour Street yesterday was in jail for 11 years for drug trafficking.

The victim was identified as Inaesamuttu Antony Raj.

The 44-year-old victim was shot at while he was travelling in a car with his wife in Messenger Street, Colombo 12.

She is now receiving treatment the ICU of the National Hospital Colombo.

The CCTV footage showed the assailants are fleeing the scene by a motorcycle after shooting at the victim.

In the case involving underworld member Shantha Kumara alias 'Kos Malli', the torso of the deceased was exhumed yesterday in Gotabayagama, Angunakolapalessa.

It was exhumed before Angunakolapelassa Magistrate Kushika Kumarasiri.

The severed head of the underworld gang member was found in a bag lying on Abdul Majeed Street in Keselwatta, Colombo 12, earlier this month.

He is identified as a close ally of murdered underworld gangster Samayan.

Police said 'Kos Malli' may have been killed in retaliation for the killing of Mohammed Riskhan who was killed by a motorcyclist.

Police said over the last three months, murders have taken place in Grandpass, Battaramulla, Thalangama, Borella, Wattala, Gampaha and Hambantota due to underworld gang rivalry.

Meanwhile, the court has granted permission to question two underworld members of Makandure Madhush's group, who were arrested in Weligama, Matara recently.

A team of STF arrested them with firearms.
