It is reported that President Maithripala Sirisena has abolished the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management.

It was decided at a special cabinet meeting held today (Mar. 20).

The President had advised abolishing the CCEM on a previous occasion too.

However, since it was not heeded, the President had decided to abolish it today.

In a previous cabinet meeting too, there was a discussion as to whether the CCEM should continue or not.

President has pointed out that most of the decisions reached through the CCEM had failed.

Volkswagen facility in Kulliyapitiya and Horana tyre factory were among the failed projects mooted by the CCEM.

He had said if a committee is needed it could be done through the cabinet.

The PM established the CCEM to make final decisions on economic development activities.

It is represented by R. Paskaralingam, Charitha Ratwatte and finance secretary R. H. S. Samaratunga.

Ministers Malik Samarawickrema and Sarath Amunugama are also in it.
