The recommendations made by the Committee whether the ban on importing glyphosate should continue or remove will be forwarded to the Cabinet of Ministers next week.

Minister of Agriculture, Duminda Dissanayake said that he had received the report prepared by the committee of experts on weedicides.

He said the committee was appointed with the Parliamentary approval.

The government took measures to ban the use of Glyphosate in 2015 taking into consideration the kidney disease which was widely spreading across many regions including the North Central Province at the time.

However, during the past few weeks, several factions within the government had expressed views on lifting the ban on glyphosate.

Minister of Plantation Industries, Navin Dissanayake expressed views about the necessity of using glyphosate in the tea industry while the Minister of Agriculture, Duminda Dissanayake had also expressed views in this regard.

However, Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thera expressing opinions on several occasions maintained a firm stance that the ban on glyphosate should not be lifted.
