Little girl suspended citing HIV concerns”

A grade-5 schoolgirl and two women staged a sit-in protest in front of the Zonal Education Director's Office in Gampaha after the school authorities evicted the little girl from the school.

The mother of the girl is an HIV positive and the little girl is attending school while being under the care of her mother's younger sister.

The mother of the girl and her sister took part in the sit-in protest.

They were wearing face masks and urged the authorities to provide a solution to the little girl, who is to sit for the Grade-5 scholarship examination this year.

Our correspondent said that the little girl is a hardworking girl and she obtains highest marks in the school examination becoming first in the class regularly.

The daughter has been suspended from Gampaha- Ganemulla Kudabollatha Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya for a second time on 20th of March.

The mother went on to state that her daughter was to sit the Grade 5 scholarship examination this year and that officials responsible have failed to provide a solution with regard to the matter.

Previously, the student was expelled from the school on the claims that the mother was HIV positive.

However, the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission made the way for the student to be granted re-entry to the school on several conditions that were agreed on by the principal and officials.

Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had previously stated that the student studying in the primary school, speculated of being HIV positive, would not be treated unjustly.

However, medical tests have proven that the girl has not contacted the disease.

Hiru news reported on this story when the initial incident took place on 17th of March last year.
