President Maithripala Sirisena has abolished the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe with immediate effect.

The decision was made at the Cabinet meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (Mar 27).

Earlier the President had twice directed the CCEM to be abolished saying that in the past nothing productive had come out of the Committee.

The President’s decision was made in spite of a UNP MP submitting his observations stating that it was necessary to continue to have the CCEM.

On this occasion, the President pointed out that necessary deliberations and decisions regarding the economy could be made at the cabinet meeting.

Reports state the President said that if there was a matter that the cabinet should discuss at length or it would be discussed by a cabinet sub-committee.
