Police step into quell Maskeliya tension"

A tense situation prevailed in Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha this morning (Mar. 28).

The situation arose when during the vote to elect a chairman to the PS.

Our correspondent said that riot police were also called in to control the situation.

The commotion started when it was found that a UNP female councillor was reported absent.

Then the other UNP councillors complained that the UNP female councillor was prevented from attending the session by the Ceylon Workers' Congress.

However, it is reported that the female councillor is receiving medical treatment at Nawalapitiya Hospital.

The UNP and the CWC secured 7 seats each at the recent Local Government election.

In addition, the United National Freedom Front and Podujana Peramuna won one seat each.

Thereafter, the remaining 6 UNP councillors who started to protest wearing black armbands, left the session.

When the vote was taken, CWC's Sembaga Valli was elected as the Chairperson of the Maskeliya PS.

She got 7 votes from CWC and one vote from the SLPP.

The UNP councillors later staged a protest at the Maskeliya Police Station.

At this moment, a clash erupted between the supporters of the UNP and CWC.

They have also pelted stones at each other and because of that several vehicles were damaged.

The vehicular traffic on the main road was disrupted for about 90 minutes.

Our correspondent said now the supporters are staging a sit-in protest there.

Meanwhile, Thushara Sanjeewa was chosen as the Mayor of Kurunegala.

The selection of Seethawaka Urban Council's Chairman was postponed due to lack of a quorum.

Meanwhile, a female councillor at Aranayake Pradeshiya Sabha, Ishara Madushani says that she was given a bribe to cast her vote in favour of the UNP.

She was elected from the SLPP.

She made a confession yesterday that she was bribed and today she was to lodge a complaint with the Bribery Commission.
