The government has decided to provide insurance schemes for paddy, potato, Bombay onions, corn, maize, soybean and green chilli crops, from the next Yala season.

Chairman of the Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board, Sydney Gajanayake said that 2.5 million farmers cultivating such crops will receive an insurance coverage amounting to Rs.40,000  per acre.

The government has allocated Rs. 100 billion for this matter.

The insurance scheme was previously provided to farmers under the 2018 budget proposals and Rs. 642 was charged from each farmer for this scheme.

The government previously paid 82 percent of the insurance premium and has now decided to bear the total cost of the insurance premium.
