Former Brazilian President to be jailed

Brazil’s Supreme Court has ruled that former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva should face jail in a historic decision that is set to further divide Latin America’s largest country ahead of elections in October.

A majority of the Supreme Court’s 11 judges rejected a request from the leftist firebrand political leader to remain free while he appeals against a corruption conviction.

Social media exploded with expressions for and against the ex-President. “Lula, thief, your place is in prison,” tweeted one detractor.

“Nelson Mandela, Gandhi and Lula, three leaders, one fact in common, they were all persecuted for defending the people,” countered supporters of Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party, or PT, on Twitter.

The impending jailing of the former president marks a dramatic fall for the firebrand populist, who rose from poverty to become the country’s first working-class president.

It also threatens to further throw open what are expected to be Brazil’s most unpredictable elections in history, with the former President leading early polling with 36 percent support, double his nearest contender.
