At least 30 people, including 23 children and adults accompanying them, are dead after their school bus veered off a mountain road in India’s Kangra Valley last afternoon (Apr. 10) and tumbled into a deep gorge in the Himalayan foothills, according to local media reports.

Kangra officials described a chaotic scene in the moments after the crash, which occurred about 300 miles north of New Delhi.

Villagers acted as first responders, rushing to the scene the moment they heard the bus smashed into the rocky gorge, local officials told the Times.

Blood drenched the villagers’ shirts as they carried the deceased children’s bodies in their arms.

Local officials fear the death toll will rise, as 11 other children were injured in what many consider the worst school bus accident in the region in recent years.
