The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam also known as TGTE is to commence a programme in Canada to push for a referendum regarding the Tamil nationals in Sri Lanka’s North and the East.

The objective of the referendum is to seek whether the people would prefer a unitary state, a federal state, a confederation or an independent state.

It is reported that former UN Under-Secretary-General and Dutch Cabinet Minister, Ad Melkert is also to join the initiative.

The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam noted that the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora worldwide has organized many activities following the launch in Canada today.

The head of the organization, Rudrakumaran has stated that Sri Lankan Tamil nationals should decide their political destiny through a referendum and that the TGTE is willing to accept their verdict.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V. Vigneshwaran, who is currently on a visit to India, has expressed views on the situation in the North and the East to the Indian media.

The Chief Minister has also made an accusation against the government at a book launch held in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu yesterday (Apr. 14).

According to the Times of India, the Chief Minister has stated that the government of Sri Lanka is not taking measures to hand over the lands of those who fled Sri Lanka to India.

However, the Chief Minister of the Northern Province has reiterated that the people in the North and the East are supporting a united Sri Lanka.
