US pledges grants to Sri Lanka, a series of conditions set

The Foreign Aid Bill which proposes monetary assistance to several countries including Sri Lanka has been passed by the Congress of the United States.
 
It was passed yesterday (Apr. 16).
 
The Bill which proposes financial aid of 1.3 trillion US dollars has been signed by US President Donald Trump.
 
Accordingly, 68.5 million US dollars has been allocated to Sri Lanka and 35 million US Dollars is to be directed towards the efforts to restore democracy.
 
Simultaneously, the US has put forward a series of conditions to grant this monetary aid.
 
Among them are settling the missing persons' issue, reducing military presence in the North and East and investigate the soldiers who have been accused of sexual abuse while they were engaged in UN Peace Keeping missions.
 
Another condition was to ensure that a reliable court of justice is established to investigate the alleged incidents that took place during the war.
 
Of that grant, 500,000 US dollars have been allocated for security forces.
 
The money is especially meant to be utilized in humanitarian and disaster operations, training and marine security purposes.
