Relatives reject Rs. 50,000 compensation offered to Horana victims

Relatives of the deceased following the accident in a rubber processing factory in Bellapitiya, Horana have refused to accept the compensation offered by a representative of the factory.
 
A relative of a victim said that the official had offered Rs. 50, 000 as compensation for a victim. He said the company official made the offer when they were at the Panadura Hospital where the postmortems of the 5 victims were conducted last afternoon (Apr. 20).
 
Meanwhile, the Commissioner General of Labor, A. Wimalasiri said that legal action will be taken against the ill-fated rubber processing factory.
 
He also said that he has already received reports of the initial investigation with regard to the accident.
 
The Labor Commissioner General further said that the factory management had been advised on several occasions to follow safety measures.
 
He pointed out that but they had not paid attention to the instructions.
.
At the same time, the Central Environment Authority stated that it would take action to suspend the operation of this rubber factory until the investigations into the accident are concluded.
 
Meanwhile, Western Provincial Chief Minister, Isura Devapriya who inspected the ill-fated factory at Bellapitiya in Horana stated that the factory will be closed.
 
Five workers died and 19 others hospitalized after inhaling a toxic gas in an accident at this factory on Wednesday.
 
In addition, the Horana Magistrate remanded the manager of the factory until 25th of April.
