Sri Lanka tea exporters say there’s a possibility that Sri Lanka tea would lose the Japanese market as a result of an emerging new issue.

They said that as a result of a different chemical being used as weedicides in tea cultivations, consequent to the ban on glyphosate, Sri Lankan tea had failed to reach export quality standards at Japanese laboratories.

However, when we inquired this from the Sri Lanka Tea Research Institute, a top TRI official said that although there was such a rumour being circulated, at this stage, they have not received any feedback at the diplomatic level.

The official said that an investigation had been launched to determine if such an issue is emerging.

Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers’ Association says that after glyphosate was banned, the import of the ‘food flavour’ M.S.G. aka monosodium had gone up.

Participating at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (Apr. 26) the GMOA executive committee member Dr. Dhanushka Devapriya said that in the past year alone 2000 metric tonnes of M.S.G. has been imported.
