Diplomatic intervention mooted to solve the tea crisis

The Ministry of Plantation industries expects to make a request to the Japanese government through diplomatic channels regarding the matter that has arisen in connection to tea exports to Japan.

The Chairman of the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka, Jayantha Gawarammana said that they would put forward a request to amend the minimum residual value of the chemical MCPA found in Ceylon tea.

A special meeting will be convened by the Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Industries to discuss this further.

Previously, Japan has rejected a consignment of Ceylon tea worth over 1 billion rupees, stating that MCPA had exceeded the standard quantity in the consignment.

Minister Navin Dissanayake this he would speak to President Maithripala Sirisena in order to make a decision regarding steps to be taken to amicably solve this issue.
