A sub-inspector attached to the Eppawala Police has been interdicted in connection with an alleged assault on a group of female protesters on a temple premises.

IGP Pujith Jayasundara directed the Senior DIG of the North Central Province to take disciplinary action against this policeman yesterday.

A senior police officer in the area told our news team that the suspected SI has allegedly used a club during the protest to assault the women.

A group of residents has staged a protest against the return of the incumbent monk of this temple who left the temple sometime ago.

A tense situation erupted between the protesters and police when police attempted to disperse the crowd.

Two female protesters who were released on police bail were admitted to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital later.

However, a senior police officer in the area stated that a court order had also been obtained earlier against the controversial incumbent monk.
