Marking May Day today, in a statement President Maithripala Sirisena said he salutes the working force of the country for its relentless struggle to intelligently and collectively work towards the economic progress of the country, while leaving aside communal and religious differences, working for the betterment of all people.

He went on to say, the human civilization evolved with the courage of the people who did not surrender when faced with challenges.

May Day reminds us of the fact that the freedom we enjoy today is because of the sacrifices, the blood and sweat shed by those great people, he added.

Marking May Day today, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe called on all workers to be radical in the accomplishment of their responsibilities and commitments, in order to rewrite a history for Workers’ Day.

Human labour is widely recognized and valued with the communication and technological advancements in the present world, he noted.

Though today is international labour day, the government decided to postpone May-day celebrations to the 7th of May, as it coincides with Vesak week.

In spite of this, certain political parties and trade unions have organized celebrations today.

The JVP has scheduled its May-day celebrations at the Jaffna Municipal Council ground today.

The Tamil National Alliance has also organized its May-day celebrations in Jaffna- Vadamaarachchi.

In addition, the Frontline Socialist Party and Socialist People's Front have also scheduled their May-day celebrations for today.
