The Archaeological Department says that legal action will be taken against state officials and contractors who are responsible for destroying an archaeological site in Wijithapura, Anuradhapura for a housing project.

Director General of the Department Professor P. B. Mandawala said that steps will be taken to recover expenses for restoring the site to its original condition from the relevant institutions.

It is reported that this area had been used by King Elara’s soldiers to carry out intelligence gathering during the war with King Dutugamunu.

Artefacts in the area were destroyed when the area was cleared by the Housing Development Authority to build a new village.

The Ipalogama Divisional Secretary accepted the damage caused but said that the land was released while being unaware of its historical importance.
