‘Bus fare increase’ gets greenlight

The government has agreed to revise the fares of Sri Lanka Transport Board operated buses and private buses.
 
The Deputy Transport Minister Ashok Abeysinghe said that the relevant proposal would be presented to the Cabinet today (May 15).
 
Accordingly, the minimum bus fare will be revised to Rs. 12 from the present fare of Rs. 10.
 
The overall fare increase will be around 8% to 10%.
 
The private bus unions and the Secretary of the Ministry of Transport G. S. Vithanage discussed the matter at the National Transport Commission yesterday. 
 
The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ashok Abeysinghe said that the decisions reached during that meeting will be included in the Cabinet paper.
 
Earlier, some bus unions threaten to call an island-wide strike if bus fares are not revised by 20% by Thursday.
 
They wanted the minimum fare to revised to Rs. 15.
