Private bus unions say that that they would refrain from providing transport service from midnight tonight since the fare has not been raised to match the fuel price increase, as requested.

The decision to launch a strike came after the cabinet approval for raising private and SLTB bus fares by just 6.56 percent was announced.

The new fare was made effective from midnight last night (May 15).

The bus fare revision committee had lengthy discussions and took into consideration the 12 indicators.

It was then decided that the current bus fare should be increased by 6.56 percent.

it was decided that the minimum bus fare of Rs. 10 not be changed.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala Silva submitted the relevant decisions to the cabinet yesterday.

However, the private bus unions charged that the cabinet approved revision was not fair, as the unions had requested an increase of between 15 and 20 percent.

They said that as a result, they would launch an uninterrupted island-wide strike from midnight tonight.

They said that although Transport deputy minister Ashok Abeysinghe had informed the private bus unions to attend a discussion today, they would not be attending the discussion.

The SLTB said that the increased bus fare would come into effect from today.
