A memorial statue for the Tamil people who died in the war was declared open with the participation of Northern Chief Minister, C. V. Wigneshwaran in the coastal area of Mullivaikkal in Mullaitivu this morning (May 18).

A group of Northern Provincial Councillors and another group of students from Jaffna University arrived in a motorcade to Mullivaikal to participate in the event.

Students of the Jaffna University also organized a commemoration for the Tamil people who died in the conflict.

It is also reported that many schools in the North flew the provincial flag at half-mast today.

Earlier, Northern Provincial Education Minister asked school administration to do so.

However, Minister of Law and Order Ranjith Madduma Bandara said that no legal permission has been given to hold commemorations of the war dead.
