The Cabinet has granted its approval to increase bus fares by 12.5%.

Accordingly, the minimum fare will also be increased to Rs.12.

The Deputy Minister Nishantha Muthuhettigama confirmed this and he said that the new bus fares are effective from midnight today (May 22).

The proposal to increase the bus fare by 12.5 percent was presented to the Cabinet today.

The bus unions agreed for this bus fare revision during a discussion with the Deputy Transport Minister Ashok Abeysinghe on 16th of this month.

Consequent to this, the strike that was due to be launched on 17th was suspended.

However, All Island Private Bus Union Federation President Stanley Fernando earlier warned that if the Cabinet failed to approve the 12.5 percent bus fare increase, the federation will launch a strike action.

We also inquired about this from Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association President Gemunu Wijeratne who said that he would refrain from expressing his views on the matter.

However, he had earlier said that according to the national policy, the bus fare could be raised only by 9 or 10 percent.
