A division was created in the Joint Opposition as well as in the Tamil National Alliance during the vote to select Deputy Speaker in Parliament yesterday (Jun 05).

Although the Joint Opposition and the TNA were expected to vote for MP Sudharshini Fernandopulle, some members were not present during the vote.

The parliamentary group leader of the Joint Opposition, Dinesh Gunawardena said that a decision was taken during the parliamentary group meeting chaired by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, to vote for the MP Fernandopulle.

He stated that the reasons for failure to vote for her by several JO members should be ascertained.

Meanwhile, TNA MP Selvam Addaikkalanathan revealed that when the secret ballot was announced, Opposition Leader, R. Sampanthan’s statement seeking support to MP Fernandopulle was not acceptable.

Consequently, UNP MP, Ananda Kumarasiri who received 97 votes in the secret ballot, was elected the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

MP Fernandopulle secured only 53 votes.

Despite Opposition Leader recommended MP Fernandopulle for the post, TNA MPs abstained from voting.

The JVP also did not vote and certain Joint Opposition MPs too were absent during the vote.
