Two off-duty soldiers were killed on the spot when the three-wheeler that they were travelling by collided head-on with a tipper in Puwakpitiya on the Dambulla - Galewela road.
 
Another person was critically injured in the accident.
 
He was first admitted to Galewela Hospital and later transferred to Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
 
The deceased were 22-year-old Samith Maduranga Ekanayake and 23-year-old Supun Kalhara Rajathilleke.
 
They were on leave and were serving at an army camp in Diyathalawa.
 
The victims were returning home after attending a funeral when the tragedy struck.
 
Police said that the three-wheeler had attempted to overtake a car at high speed and then hit the tipper head-on.
 
The tipper driver was arrested by police.
