Chief Incumbent of the Kataragama- Kirivehera, the Ven. Kobawaka Dhamminda Thera has been shot at.

The Thera is currently receiving treatment at Hambanthota General Hospital’s  ICU.

A spokesperson for the hospital noted that the condition of the Thera is not critical.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Thera, accompanied by Ven. Veedaapola Sobhitha Thera, was making his way down to the lower compound from the upper compound of KiriVehera, last night when they were shot at.

Three unidentified gunmen who were hiding in the lower compound shot at the thera and subsequently fled the scene in a red jeep which was parked near Kiri Vehera.

Both of them were admitted to Debarawewa Base Hospital and later transferred to Hambanthota General Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesperson for the hospital noted that the chief incumbent had sustained injuries to his right leg and left arm while the other Thera had sustained injuries to his right leg.

The jeep used to flee the scene, which was later located by police,  in close proximity to Kiri Vehera.

The motive behind the incident is yet to be determined.

 5 police  teams have been deployed to undertake the investigation.
