Muslims in Sri Lanka would celebrate Ramazan festival today (Jun 16) as the new moon has been sighted.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena in a message issued in view of Ramazan said that the salvation and betterment of the human being could only be attained in an environment of good thoughts where moral values are strengthened.

He added, "It is the noble message of giving priority for peace conveyed to humanity by Islam devotees when they celebrate Ramazan after observing fast for a month, and making sacrifices".

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his Ramazan message said that this is an important religious festival celebrated by Muslims across the globe to mark equality, purity, and devotion.

This period of fasting functions as a means of reassessment for Muslims, as they strive to lead a life of cooperation and compassion with spiritual purity, the PM said.
