Medical practitioners await a decision on Influenza injection

The Ministry of Health says that the recommendation to be given by the special committee appointed to advise on the injection to be administered to control the Influenza virus is yet to be released.
 
The Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Janaka Sugathadasa said that as a consequence there has been a delay in making an injection available to government hospitals.
 
To date, 25 deaths have been reported due to the spread of influenza in the Southern Province, 18 of those victims were children.
 
Most recently a 4-month-old baby died of the virus at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital last Sunday.
 
Meanwhile, Southern Health Director, Dr. G. Wijesuriya said that on a daily basis approximately 60 patients are seeking treatment from government hospitals for the disease.
 
Additionally, according to Sabaragamuwa Provincial Health Director, Dr. Athula Kannangara on a daily basis, approximately 10 patients seek treatment from government hospitals in the province.
