Election Commission to discuss roadblocks to hold PC elections with Speaker

Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya is scheduled to meet with the Speaker of parliament Karu Jayasuriya at the parliamentary complex this morning for a special discussion on the provincial council elections.
 
It is reported that the Election Commission Chairman is to request from the speaker that The Provincial Council Elections be held without further delay and that the necessary legal environment is set up as soon as possible.
 
The official term of the Eastern, North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces ended last September.
 
The official term of the Central, North Western and Northern provinces will end this September.
 
If the Provincial Council Elections are to be held according to the proportional voting system, the current act should be amended.
 
If the election is to be held under the new electoral system, the delimitations report which has been presented to parliament should be passed.
 
The Elections Commission cannot hold elections until one of these requirements are fulfilled.
 
Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya met with political party representatives on Monday to discuss the matter.
