Parliament was adjourned until tomorrow as a tense situation erupted in the House following continuous arguments over the controversial speech made by State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran.

Maheswaran told a gathering in Jaffna yesterday that she wanted to see the resurrection of the LTTE.

Later, the Speaker stated that he informed the Attorney General to ascertain whether Maheswaran has violated the constitution by stating that the LTTE should be revived and if so, to take necessary legal action.

It is significant that a UNP MP asked party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam to explain the party stance on the state minister, Vijayakala Maheshwaran’s statement.

Later, Minister, Kariyawasam refuted Maheshwaran’s statement.

When MP Wimal Weerawansa expressed his views, a tense situation erupted in the House.

However, it is significant that UNP MP Ashoka Priyantha proposed to sack State Minister Vijayakala from her current portfolio.

Later, the House was adjourned for 10 minutes.

Subsequently, Joint opposition MPs, as well as UNP MP Ashoka, also expressed their opposition to the statement made by MP Vijayakala Maheswaran.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya quoted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as saying that he would hold an investigation on the statement made by the State Minister.

However, opposition MPs demanded that such an answer is not sufficient and the Speaker should take some substantial action against her.

Our correspondent stated that MPs Wimal Weerawansa, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Dayasiri Jayasekera and Prasanna Ranaweera walked into the well of the House and protested.

At the same time a letter that asked action against Maheswaran was handed over to the Speaker with 11 signatories but the latter refused to accept it.

MP, Prasanna Ranaweera attempted several times to remove the Mace and the Speaker was compelled to adjourn the House amidst continuous protests by the opposition MPs.
