The Trade Union Collective for Protecting Education says that as planned it has implemented a trade union action today by reporting sick leave.

The trade union action is being taken to voice its opposition to appointments being made in the education sector citing political revenge.

This strike will be carried out by 11 unions including the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service Officers’ Union, Sri Lanka Teacher Educational Service Officers’ Union, Lanka Teachers’ Union and the Lanka Teacher Services Union.

Discussions held with the Prime Minister at his office yesterday were unsuccessful.

As a consequence of this, Lanka Teachers’ Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin said that the trade union action would take place today as planned.

However, Education Minister Akila Viraaj Kaariyawasam said that in spite of statements made by trade unions, he believed duty-conscious school principals and teachers would report to work today.
