Objections in Parliament for proposed limitations to representation in regional development committees

The Opposition MPs raised objections in Parliament today (Jul 05) to the new circular restricting the participation by local government councillors in regional development committee meetings.
 
Opposition MP, Ranjith Zoysa questioned the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as to whether the new circular has been cancelled.
 
Recently, a tense situation erupted in Mulatiyana Development Committee meeting when a JVP councillor asked a question from Minister Sagala Rathnayake.
 
Minister Rathnayake responded by saying that only the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, his representative, and the Opposition Leader have authority to participate in the meeting.
 
The relevant councillors then walked out, in protest of the Minister’s statement.
 
The new circular was introduced consequent to that incident.
