UNP appoints committee to examine Vijayakala's statement

The United National Party has appointed a four-member Committee to examine former State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran's statement.
 
The Committee members are Ministers Thalatha Athukorala, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Kabir Hashim and Ranjith Maddumabandara.
 
Meanwhile, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told the Parliament today (Jul 06) that the highest possible action has been taken against Jaffna district UNP MP Vijayakala Maheshwaran.
 
He said this in response to a query posed by the leader of National Freedom Front Wimal Weerawansa.
 
The Speaker said that the Attorney General has been adviced to take necessary action against her.
 
Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake today (Jul 06) ordered five media institutions to provide the unedited recording containing the controversial statement of former State Minister Vijayakala Maheshwaran to the Organized Crimes Prevention Division.

He gave the order considering a case filed by the National Organizer of Sinhala Ravaya, Ven. Magalkande Sudaththa Thera.
 
Our court correspondent said that the Organized Crimes Prevention Division made a submission to the court on the incident and the Magistrate issued the order based on their submissions.
 
Meanwhile, Sinhala Ravaya said they will hand over a letter to the President’s Secretariat today (Jul 06) requesting that Vijayakala Maheshwaran is arrested.
 
The National Organizer of Sinhala Ravaya, Ven. Magalkande Sudaththa Thera said that the party would give evidence against the former State Minister in the court.
 
Maheshwaran submitted her letter of resignation to the President and the Prime Minister last afternoon.
 
She had decided to resign following a meeting with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe after her controversial statement on the revival of LTTE drew condemnation from many quarters.
