The Chairman of the State Plantation Corporation, Thilak Mahanama says that they have decided to cancel certain projects at the Knuckles range.

Addressing a media conference held at the Central Environment Authority, he said the decision was taken after it was found that the acquired lands for these projects are within the Knuckles forest reserve.

The Knuckles reserve is the first ever conserved forest in Sri Lanka and the 4th on the list of World Heritage forests.

Environmental activists and the media emphasized the need to protect the forest from recent politically backed projects and vandalism.

The Minister of Public Enterprise and Kandy Development Lakshman Kiriella recently refuted the allegations that the Knuckles forest range is being destroyed by people with political backing.

However, addressing the media at the Central Environmental Authority yesterday, the Chairman of the State Plantation Corporation Thilak Mahanama said that he had instructed the ongoing constructions at the Knuckles range to be suspended.
