Most of the Sri Lankans would still remember the incident where a police officer had assaulted a woman at the Ratnapura bus terminal in September 2014.

Later, the woman who was assaulted by the policeman filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court.

After a lengthy trial, the verdict was delivered yesterday (Jul 25).

Accordingly, the policeman was ordered to pay a compensation of Rs. 55,000 to the victim, Weerasinghe Arachchilage Kanthilatha, alias 'Batti'.

She filed her FR case citing physical and mental agony that she underwent as a result of being harassed at a public place and she wanted a compensation of Rs. 50 million.

She also filed a complaint with the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission.
