The political party leaders who met to discuss the method to hold next provincial council election have failed to reach a consensus.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Parliamentary complex this morning (Jul 26).

Opposition Leader, R. Sampanthan, Joint Opposition Leader, Dinesh Gunawardena, JVP Leader, Anura Kumara Dissanayake; and SLFP representatives, Nimal Siripala de Silva and Faizser Mustapha participated.

In addition, Party leaders Mano Ganesan, Rauff Hakeem, Doulas Devananda and Patali Champika Ranawaka also took part in the discussion.

The party leaders have agreed to take a final decision during a meeting to be held at Temple Trees this Wednesday.

During the meeting today, SLFP and JVP opined that the provincial council election should be held under the new method.

Ministers, Mano Ganesan, Douglas Devananda, and Rauff Hakeem have stated that the provincial council election should be held under the old system as more time would consume to implement election amendments.

Minister Mano Ganesan said that the UNP, TNA and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka have proposed to hold the election after making the amendments to the new electoral system.
