The day-time temperature of certain areas in the island has increased today.
 
The temperature in Hambantota and Jaffna districts was reported 4 degrees Celsius higher than that of the average temperature within the 24 hours which ended at 8.30 am today.
 
The Meteorology Department stated that temperatures in the districts of Kurunegala, Nuwara Eliya and Vavuniya districts have also increased by 2 percent.
 
The highest temperature of 36.7 degrees Celsius was recorded from Polonnaruwa district.
 
However, the daytime temperature in Ratnapura and in the night in Ratmalana the temperature had increased by 2 degrees Celsius yesterday.
 
Meanwhile, Sri Lankans will be able to witness the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century tonight.
 
The lunar eclipse will begin at 10.45 pm tonight and will end at 4.58 am tomorrow.
 
Astronomers have stated that the lunar eclipse will be visible to the naked eye from 11.45 pm to 3.49 am.
 
The lunar eclipse, which also coincides with Esala full moon poya day, is called a blood moon as the moon will appear in blood red or reddish brown.
