Suspects arrested in connection with Bulathsinhala robbery detained for questioning

Police have given permission by courts to detain the two suspects for 48 hours and question them over the robbery of Rs. 30 million in Pahala Naragala area on Horana Road in Bulathsinhala.
 
Police were granted permission when the suspects were produced before Matugama Magistrate today.
 
The driver of the van in which the cash was transported and its security officer were arrested in connection with the incident.
 
Police said that further investigations are underway by examining the footage of CCTV cameras placed in the vicinity of the location.
 
A private company was transporting the cash to be deposited in ATM machines of two private banks in Narahenpita.
 
The driver of the van, a security officer, and two cashiers, who had also been accompanying, had made a stop at a restaurant in Bulathsinhala to have lunch.
 
It is reported that an unidentified group who had arrived in a jeep had thrown chilli powder at the individuals and carried out the robbery.
 
It has further been revealed that the rear door of the van had not been locked at the time of the incident, creating suspicion.
 
The safe carrying 19 bags of cash had been locked using only two ordinary padlocks.
 
The robbers had fled the scene taking 12 out of the 19 bags with them in their jeep bearing license plate 64-9217.  
 
The security officer and the driver were arrested following the incident over their failure to follow strict security protocol.
