Reports say that a tense situation was erupted at the Cabinet meeting yesterday (Jul 31) as the opinions of Ministers Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Dr. Rajitha Senarathna and Mangala Samaraweera disputed over a special cabinet paper to rectify the salary anomalies of the railway employees.

Political sources confirmed that when Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama submitted the special cabinet paper, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera expressed his stern opposition to it.

Minister of Health Rajitha Senarathna then expressed views supporting the cabinet paper of Minister Amunugama.

The Cabinet earlier appointed a committee headed by Minister Amunugama and this special cabinet paper had been prepared based on that committee recommendations.

On this occasion, Minister Samaraweera had noted that by putting forward special cabinet papers of this nature, problems could arise in other sectors as well.

In spite of Minister Samaraweera voicing his opposition, the cabinet paper was approved yesterday.

The railway trade unions earlier called off a planned token strike that was scheduled to be launched on Monday at midnight after Minister Amunugama assured that the issues will be resolved.
