An unusually large number of wild animals, that included deer, stags, porcupines and several species of birds,   have died after drinking contaminated water from the Sathpattini Tank near Somawathi sanctuary.

Polonnaruwa Beat Officer, Upali Kulatunga said that initial investigations reveal that the animals were poisoned to death.

Meanwhile, residents in the area have been charged with poisoning the waterholes of the dried up Sathpattini wewa to kill wild animals.

They complained that the flesh of the carcasses is being sold to nearby hotels.

The incident has already been reported to the authorities but neither the Beat Officer nor the Divisional Secretary has responded to their complaint.
