Reports state that the leaders of affiliated parties in the UPFA unanimously decided yesterday that the post of parliamentary opposition leader should be retained by TNA leader MP R. Sampanthan.

Political sources said that the UPFA had decided that it was inappropriate to give the post to a UPFA MP since the joint opposition MPs are a group that had contested under the UPFA and the UPFA works as a government-affiliated party.

The UPFA general secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera submitted the UPFA view to the Speaker in writing yesterday.

The Speaker’s office stated that the UPFA view regarding the opposition leader post will be informed to parliament after discussions at the party leaders’ meeting scheduled to be held this afternoon.
