The mortal remains of DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi were taken from Kauvery Hospital to his Gopalapuram residence today.

Meanwhile, a delegation of DMK lawyers moved the High Court asking for an emergency hearing of a petition demanding M. Karunanidhi’s burial at Marina Beach.

DMK supporters and party workers protested outside the Kauvery Hospital and Karunanidhi’s residence after the Tamil Nadu government denied land at Marina beach for the memorial of the former chief minister.

The state government has offered two acres land for his memorial at the Gandhi Mandapam, which comprises four other memorials of eminent people such as Rettamalai Srinivasan, Rajaji, Kamaraj and Minjur Bhaktavatsalam.

Karunanidhi was being treated for age-related illnesses in Chennai (formerly Madras) in southern India's Tamil Nadu state.

He served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu five times between 1969 and 2011, and also played a key role in federal politics. He contested - and won - 13 elections in the state.

A school dropout, he made his name as a successful scriptwriter in Tamil films.

Police have increased security in Chennai amid fears of unrest among his supporters, who have gathered in the streets in large numbers.
