President rejects a cabinet paper submitted on monitoring MPs

It has been reported that President Maithripala Sirisena has rejected the proposal on the provision of facilities including an office, a team of seven staff members an official vehicle, with allowances for fuel and telephone, for monitoring MPs.
 
They have been appointed to Ministries to evaluate the Gampareliya Development Programme.
 
The relevant Cabinet paper was presented during the Cabinet meeting yesterday (Aug 07).
 
The President had opposed this proposal and had stated that it cannot be accommodated.
 
It has been reported that Ministers Mahinda Amaraweera and Nimal Siripala de Silva agreed with the President on the matter and had expressed their views during the Cabinet meeting.
 
Meanwhile, the proposal to obtain private legal counsel for Fundamental Rights cases filed against Ministers at the Supreme Court, at the expense of the government was also rejected by the President yesterday.
 
That cabinet paper was presented by Minister Malik Samarawickrama.
 
A senior State Minister said that the President had assured a response to the proposal at the next Cabinet meeting, following consultation with the Attorney General.
