The railway trade unions say they have decided to call off their strike after a discussion with President Maithripala Sirisena.

The secretary of Locomotive Engine Drivers' Union Indika Dodangoda said they took the decision after President had promised to solve their issues.

Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Ashok Abeysinghe said that even if the railway strike is continued further the government will never agree to their unfair demands.

The Deputy Minister said that the Ministry of Finance had requested for two months to provide solutions to the salary anomalies highlighted by the unions.

The unannounced trade union action was launched by railway trade unions on Wednesday at 3 pm demanding their salary anomalies be rectified.

A committee headed by Dr. Sarath Amunugama had prepared a report with a recommendation to a salary hike.

However, it was vehemently opposed by the Minister of Finance, Mangala Samaraweera citing that it would create greater anomalies in their entire public sector.
