The protest launched by the female detainees at Welikada Prison is continuing.

The protest was launched over several demands including the lack of appropriate facilities for female inmates at the prison and demanding for speedy processing of court cases.

A clash that took place due to a difference of opinion amongst the protesters, left four inmates injured.

Reports state that the injuries sustained by the detainees who were hospitalized were not serious.

Meanwhile, as of last night, Borella police have provided special security at Welkada Prison.

Reports said that close to 30 detainees are participating in the protest.

The Committee for Protecting Prisoners’ Rights who also staged a protest in front of the prison yesterday, has also decided to lodge a complaint with the International Human Rights Commission.

At a function held at Nivitigala yesterday When journalists questioned the subject Minister, Talatha Athukorala, regarding the protest, the Minister said that action would be taken in accordance with the correct procedure.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has decided to send a Special Representative to look into the issue and find solutions.
