The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Professor G. L. Peiris says that the Supreme Court’s opinion will be sought with regard to the views expressed by legal experts that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa can contest for the presidency for the third time as per the 19th constitutional amendment.

Legal experts have highlighted that the provisions in the 19th constitutional amendment do not have a retrospective effect.

Under the 18th constitutional amendment which was passed in parliament during the former regime, it was possible to contest for the presidency any number of times.

However, under the 19th constitutional amendment measures were taken to impose a 2-term limit, as was the case initially.

The 19th amendment was passed in parliament with a majority after President Maithripala Sirisena came into power.
