The United States Annual Report on Military and Security Developments mandated by Congress has made references to Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port.

The report in relation to Chinese military developments said that over the last three years, the People's Liberation Army has rapidly expanded its overwater bomber operating areas and likely training for strikes against US and allied targets.

China formally established a military base in Djibouti - Africa in July last year followed several months later by the country's acquisition of the Hambantota port in Sri Lanka.

In response to the report, China called on the US to abandon its "Cold War mentality."

Meanwhile, Japan's Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera will visit Sri Lanka from tomorrow.

He will be in Sri Lanka until 22nd of this month.

This will be the first visit by a Japanese Defence Minister to Sri Lanka in history.

The embassy of Japan said he will meet Sri Lanka's leaders and is also planning to have field visits outside Colombo, including Hambantota and Trincomalee.

Senior Japanese diplomats recently visited Hambantota Port, which is now being managed by China.
