Western PC Chief Minister faces no-confidence motion

The councillors representing the Joint Opposition have drawn attention to move a no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister of the Western Province Isura Devapriya.
Councilor Sunil Jayamini said that discussions are going on to obtain the support of other political parties.
Recently Devapriya had called tenders from Belgium to import 125 chairs at a cost of Rs. 640,000 per chair.
Western Province’s Governor, Hemakumara Nanayakkara had later suspended the deal.
Councillor Jayamini who represents the Joint Opposition said that his 37 fellow members are considering sitting in the Opposition under these circumstances.
The UPFA is the ruling party in the 104-member Western Provincial Council.
However, 59 members support the government while 38 support the Joint Opposition.
45 are sitting in the Opposition.
Among them, there are 28 from the UNP, 9 from the Democratic Party, 6 from the JVP and 2 from the Democratic People’s Front.
